This excellent solo album from Jamaican trombonist-turned-bandleader Vin Gordon was recorded in 1980 and originally released on the legendary Joe Gibbs Music label, before being re-issued in 2020 under the Studio 16 imprint (STU16LP008).
Vin Gordon, also known as Don Drummond Junior, had earned a renowned reputation as one of Jamaica’s top brass–voices, famed for his work with Studio One and his trombone on the classic “Real Rock” rhythm.
Here, Gordon steps front and centre, delivering his unique melodic phrasing and musical leadership over roots-based rockers, dub-inspired instrumentals and ska-flavoured rhythms. The re-press brings this under-exposed gem back into circulation for vinyl collectors.
Vin Gordon’s confident brass-led arrangements draw on the deep well of Jamaican roots reggae, while also leaning into dub’s spacious textures. In 1980, reggae was branching into more meditative and instrumental territory, and this album reflects that shift: it’s grounded in rhythm and bass but also features melodic brass and instrumentals that hint at ska’s earlier legacy.
With the 2020 repress, it’s ideal both for hearing that transitional period and for modern vinyl fidelity. The ska/rockers underlay gives it crossover appeal for those exploring Jamaican music beyond vocals.
