This 1977 compilation LP captures The Maytones at a key moment—when their transition from melodic love-songs to roots-reggae consciousness was solidifying. The duo, formed in May Pen, Clarendon, Jamaica, were active from the late 1960s and by the mid-1970s were exploring deeper roots themes while retaining soulful harmony vocals.
Compiled by GG’s Records with catalogue number GG006, this release brings together standout tracks such as “Madness,” “Stop Way,” “Funny Man,” “Music Is the Part of Life,” “Ital Queen,” and others listed in GG’s discography.
The production on this label was led by producer/arranger G. G. Ranglin (aka Alvin Ranglin) and backed by the Jamaica studio musicians of the era, delivering a polished roots reggae sound with strong vocals, driving basslines, and rhythmic skank.
For collectors and reggae aficionados, this LP is more than a “greatest hits” – it highlights The Maytones’ evolution in the roots era, and their contributions to the Jamaican reggae vocabulary of the 1970s.
